
Heather Lockie is a violist, composer and teaching artist based in Los Angeles. She teaches improvisation on violin/viola, classical viola and piano. In her own work, she plays viola, banjo, paints, sings songs and writes folk music. She completed her master’s degree in music in 2012 at California Institute of the Arts, where she studied overlapping disciplines: music composition, microtonalism, songwriting and puppetry/electronics within performance/installation context. She has an undergrad degree from Occidental College in Comparative Literature in French/English.
Currently she teaches tiny children to unleash tiny noises on tiny violas and performs in various musical capacities in Los Angeles. She also illustrates children’s e-books for a charter school company based on the East Coast. Live music projects include 3/3rds, The Royal US, Copper Root, The Kreation Ensemble.
Lockie has toured as a backing musician with international artists such as Spiritualized, Arthur Lee/LOVE, Eels, as well as with various independent bands including her own projects Marshweed, Listing Ship and Leather Hyman. She has performed at diverse venues, from LACMA, The Museum of Jurassic Technology and The Hammer Museum to world-renowned venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Letterman, Leno, and various DIY spaces throughout America (treehouses, attics, RVs).
